What is content management?

A Content Management System (CMS) allows you to efficiently update your website without work flow interruption. It plays a vital role in the accuracy and speed in which content can be made available online with the control at your fingertips.

Benefits of content management
  • No prior knowledge of web site development is required
  • Content can be created easily using ‘what you see is what you get’ (WYSIWYG) text editors, just like creating a simple word document
  • Easily add new pages or edit existing content with drag/drop features
  • Simple to publish and un-publish content from the internet or your internal intranet
  • The content managed may include images, PDFs, word documents, audio and video files
  • A CMS will save costs through rationalised resource utilisation
  • Control ‘rights management’ to grant/deny access to particular resources within the website
  • Allows you to tweak your keywords for Search Engine Optimization
Well managed content further allows upgrading the site or simply changing the design layer much more effectively. While using a database-driven CMS that takes advantage of a template engine, the site could be incrementally changed to suit the newest internet trends instead of requiring a full web redesign.

Another benefit of a database-driven CMS is that content can be archived and still be publicly available (even though a new site has been developed and launched). This contributes to Search Engine Optimization and can act as a resource in case old content is ever needed at later dates.
